Best Boswellia Serrata Supplements for 2026

Boswellia Extract 65% boswellic acidsBoswellia serrata is a tree that grows in India, the Middle East and North Africa. It’s also known as Indian frankincense and produced a resinous gum with active compounds called boswellic acids.

These boswellic acids have strong anti-inflammatory properties and supplements made from powdered boswellia gum resin are popular for joint pain, arthritis, weight loss, gut health, respiratory problems, skin conditions and more.

This guide has the best value boswellia extract capsules and bulk boswellia serrata powder I’ve found in my research. Also ahead, a comparison with 5-Loxin AKBA, AprèsFlex complex and boswellia phytosome supplements, and if liquid drops, tablets or boswellia gummies are worth taking or not.

7 Reasons Why People Take Boswellia Serrata

Boswellia supplements are primarily used to reduce inflammation. The boswellic acids they contain work by inhibiting the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase, which plays a central role in inflammatory processes within your body.

Because chronic inflammation can lead to a wide range of different health concerns and disorders, boswellia and its boswellic acids can be beneficial for many different conditions. Here are 7 common examples of why people take this natural remedy.Indian frankincense gum resin

  1. Joint Pain and Arthritis: Boswellia serrata has proven to be effective at alleviating joint pain from chronic conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Many sufferers report improved mobility and reduced stiffness after regularly using boswellia extracts.
  2. Liver Health: Taking supplemental boswellia regularly can lower elevated liver enzymes and improve liver function. Its antioxidant properties also help protect your liver from oxidative stress and inflammation.
  3. Losing Weight: Boswellia’s boswellic acids may support healthy weight loss by inhibiting fat cell growth and improving lipid profiles. By doing this it can help prevent excess body fat accumulation and promote healthier metabolism.
  4. Skin Improvement: Boswellia’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties improve skin health by reducing inflammation and aiding healing. It is beneficial for conditions like acne and eczema and encourages collagen production for anti-aging effects.
  5. Respiratory Benefits: Boswellia supplements help with symptoms of asthma and bronchitis by reducing respiratory inflammation. Asthma sufferers often report improved lung function and less congestion after taking it.
  6. Gut Health: Boswellia serrata has been shown to be useful for managing IBS and inflammatory bowel disorders like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. It’s known to decrease flare-ups, relieve abdominal pain, and promote the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria to improve overall gut health.
  7. Better Hair: This natural remedy’s anti-inflammatory effects can lead to healthier hair by enhancing blood circulation to your scalp and increasing nutrient delivery to hair follicles.

There’s much more detail on boswellia benefits, how it works and potential side effects in this guide.

How I Use Boswellia

I’ve been taking a boswellia serrata supplement daily for most of 2026 and really like my results with it. I’m in my 50s now and had previously been getting some lower back pain and hip tightness from working long hours sitting down.

Having 2 capsules the first day noticeably helped this back and hip pain. The next day, and for the rest of the week, I took it with breakfast and dinner and found my lower back tightness was largely gone.

Starting this supplement was the only change I made in that time so I’m sure it’s what made the difference. It’s also good to know it can help my liver, gut health, skin and hair.

It’s important to have boswellia complex supplements with a meal containing some healthy fats, not on an empty stomach. Their active compounds are called boswellic acids and they are fat soluble.

For occasional lower back pain, sore joints and other intermittent inflammation, positive results are usually noticeable within a few hours. However, for chronic inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, experts say it often takes several weeks for full effects to be felt.

Best Boswellia Extract Capsules

Boswellia extract contain on whiteThere are many different supplement brands offering boswellia serrata products in 2026 and there are some important elements to look out for before choosing one.

The first thing you want to see on the supplement facts label of any boswellia extract is the amount of boswellic acids it contains. Without this, you’re likely looking at a product made from low quality Indian frankincense gum resin that may have little of the active anti-inflammatory compounds.

Supplements should be manufactured in cGMP facilities in the USA, not China or India, and have proper safety testing. I also think it’s worth avoiding unnecessary fillers and additives.

With these points in mind, I settled on Double Wood’s Boswellia Extract. I chose these capsules because they are made in America in an FDA-registered GMP-certified facility, have a minimum 65% boswellic acids (many only have 20%), and have no fillers (the only other ingredient is the cellulose capsule).

This Philadelphia-based company also shows third-party safety, potency and purity testing certificates on their product pages, so you know it works and is safe to take. In fact, the certificate of analysis for Double Wood’s Boswellia Serrata Extract showed a boswellic acid content of 763.7 mg per serving. That’s actually 76%, rather than the 65% minimum.

This boswellia supplement comes in a big container with 240 capsules, the highest count I’ve seen, yet is less than most competitors here on their website with a welcome discount. There’s also free US delivery and extra reductions for the multipacks if you like to stock up on your supplements like I do.

If you’re planning on taking boswellia serrata for chronic joint pain, arthritis or other inflammatory conditions, then getting it in bulk like this is especially important.

The boswellic acids in this natural remedy have a half-life of about 6 hours within your body. So you will get far more consistent results by taking it with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Other popular boswellia capsule brands that I checked during my research, such as Himalaya, Zazzee, Superior Labs, Solaray, Doctor’s Best and NOW Supplements, all had far less pills in the bottle, usually just 60, yet higher price tags. Overall, the Double Wood brand is much better value for regular use.Jim Dillan holding Boswellia Extract

Consumer Reports and Customer Reviews for Double Wood Boswellia Extract

I like to research feedback from customers on various supplement sites to get a feel for common themes and results before I start taking something. There will always be outliers with strange reactions to any nutritional product. Reoccurring positive reports, as well as common negative side effects, are well worth taking note of though.

Here’s what I found looking through consumer feedback and buyer ratings for Double Wood’s Boswellia Serrata Extract.

Common Positive Themes

1. Good for Arthritis

  • “I have arthritis and frequently have pain after being active for any length of time. Of the many supplements I have taken over the years, this is one of the best. My pain has been greatly reduced.”
  • “I have arthritis in my hip and the boswellia helps with keeping the pain down.”

2. Joint Pain Relief

  • “2 caps a day. 4 days later I suddenly realized there was no pain in my shoulder or knee. After numerous pain relievers, I finally got one that actually did the job.”
  • “Takes away pain in my back and it works faster than I expected.”

3. Natural Anti-Inflammatory

  • “It is a very good anti-inflammatory, is easy to swallow, and works quickly to relieve my lower back pain. I will continue to buy this brand of boswellia.”
  • “This is by far my favorite anti-inflammatory supplement that is in my case auto-immune friendly. Greatly reduces my body inflammation overall and makes me more mentally calm and clear.” Olibanum resin blocks

Negative Reviews

I found very few reported side effects in consumer feedback. Negative comments were predominantly from people who didn’t feel like they got noticeable results.

  • “I got this as I get occasional headaches. It didn’t help with that.”
  • “I experience a lot of congestion due to asthma. For me, this product did not work as I hoped.”

In total, Double Wood’s Boswellia Serrata Extract had an impressive 4.6 star rating out of 5 from over 2,200 customer reviews at the time I was researching this guide. 90% of feedback was 4 and 5 star ratings, which is quite high for any nutritional supplement in 2026.

Best Bulk Organic Boswellia Serrata Powder

While capsules are convenient, there is a good case to be made for buying bulk powders when you take a superfood like boswellia serrata regularly. Both higher doses and multiple daily servings usually become more affordable.

Micro Ingredients Organic Boswellia Extract powder is a good example of this principle. It comes in an 8 ounce resealable pouch with 151 servings of 1,500 milligrams. That’s over 5 months at the suggested daily dosage and nearly 2 months if you’re using it 3 times a day.

It’s certified USDA organic, standardized to 65% boswellic acids, free of soy, dairy and gluten, and has nothing but powdered boswellia serrata gum resin extract in the pouch. You can find it here on the brand’s Amazon store and would it be particularly suitable for people who like to mix powders into their smoothies, juices or other drinks.Micro Ingredients organic boswellia serrata extract powder pouch

Make sure any boswellia extract powder you get shows the amount of boswellic acids it contains, ideally 65% like the Micro Ingredients powder above. Some are only 20% and others don’t show it at all.

Customer Reviews for Micro Ingredients Boswellia Powder

Micro Ingredients Organic Boswellia Serrata Extract powder currently has a 4.6 star rating on Amazon from over 1,080 consumers, with 89% 4 and 5 stars.

Interestingly, a lot of customers say they are using this product not only for their own aches and pains, but also to help their dogs as well, several times on their vet’s recommendation.

Common Positive Themes

1. Helps with Joint Pain

  • “My husband has knee problems and joint pain. After just a few days of this he has felt such a major difference. Flexibility and a decrease in discomfort. He was taking glucosamine and it wasn’t doing anything for him.”
  • “Really helps my hip pain… The more I put it off, the more I hurt. I’m beginning to think I might be able to get my life back. Also really helps the H. Pylori I think I have.”
  • “I started using this product in the hopes of easing joint pain and I do feel significant relief. Most impressive is that I give this to my 9 year old dog and she’s jumping into the car now. I combine this with turmeric.”

2. Good Value

  • “I think it tastes good and I put it in my smoothies. I have purchased several bags thus far, and it goes further than the pill form. I also got my sister taking it for knee pain and she says it really helps with pain management.”
  • “On the advise of a trusted professional source, boswellia seems to be a wise choice for wellness. The product itself is good value and is convenient to add to beverages.”

Negative Reviews

Most negative feedback on Micro Ingredients organic boswellia powder was about the packaging or the taste. Some examples.

  • “This may work, I haven’t taken it long enough to be sure. The Arthritis Association says it’s as good as NSAIDs. However it is the worst tasting stuff.”
  • “I have mixed feelings because I like getting the boswellia in the morning. It seems to be helping with some pain in my joints after working out or running. But the taste is not really great for me.”

Realistically the taste of boswellia serrata powder shouldn’t be that noticeable mixed into a smoothie or flavored drink, but some people do seem to have a problem with it. If you know you have sensitive taste buds then the best boswellia capsules above could be a better choice.

What is 5-Loxin AKBA Boswellia Serrata Extract?

AKBA is short for acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid. This specific type of boswellic acid has been shown to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, an inflammatory enzyme used in leukotriene production.

Leukotrienes are immune-signaling molecules that are involved in joint pain and inflammation, especially in chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis. This study showed supplementing with 5-Loxin, an AKBA-enriched boswellia complex, significantly improved pain scores and physical function scores in osteoarthritis patients.

Any genuine boswellia supplements with standardized boswellic acids levels will contain some acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid. However, those made with 5-Loxin extract are standardized to contain 30% AKBA and some customers look specifically for 5-Loxin AKBA boswellia serrata capsules.

Best Value 5-Loxin AKBA Boswellia Capsules

Swanson Boswellia Serrata AKBA Extract bottle5-Loxin is a patented extract and boswellia supplements using it are usually more expensive. Pure Encapsulations Boswellia AKBA capsules currently go for $34 and other brands are even more.

The best value 5-Loxin AKBA boswellia serrata extract I’ve found is made by Swanson. It has the same 60 capsules as Pure Encapsulations and the same 5-Loxin extract standardized to 30% AKBA, yet is much less here on the brand’s store Amazon.

Importantly, only the full green ‘Swanson Boswellia Serrata Extract’ version contains 5-Loxin. This brand’s cheaper ‘Full Spectrum Boswellia’ product in the lighter label is made from regular frankincense gum resin and is does not have standardized boswellic acid.

AprèsFlex Boswellia Extract vs 5-Loxin AKBA Boswellia Supplements

AprèsFlex, also known as Aflapin, is another patented extract of boswellia serrata gum resin. It’s standardized to around 20% AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid) and also has fractions of the resin said to improve absorption.

While AprèsFlex boswellia is 20% AKBA versus 30% with 5-Loxin, this double blind and placebo controlled study of patients with osteoarthritis concluded, “5-Loxin and Aflapin (AprèsFlex) significantly improved joint function. Aflapin exhibited better therapeutic efficacy over 5-Loxin at 100 mg/day. It reduces pain rapidly, as early as after 1 week of treatment.”

So despite having a lower AKBA concentration, AprèsFlex boswellia supplements may well be worth trying, especially for people suffering from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This clinical study found “Aflapin (AprèsFlex) conferred significant improvements in pain scores as early as five days of treatment” for women suffering from osteoarthritis.

Top AprèsFlex Boswellia Serrata Capsules

Life Extension Boswellia AprèsFlex jarFrom my research, AprèsFlex is most commonly used in expensive joint formulas with a range of other ingredients, such as turmeric, collagen, ginger, tart cherry, hyaluronic acid, MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin.

These look good on the label, but most boswellia joint complexes I’ve seen are underdosed in their ingredients, while being overpriced for what you get.

Life Extension AprèsFlex is just the Aflapin boswellia serrata gum resin extract and is much better value here on Amazon. Other brands like SuperSmart’s Super Boswellia Complex are almost double the cost for the same AprèsFlex formula.

65% Boswellic Acid Boswellia Extract vs 5-Loxin AKBA and AprèsFlex Supplements

Both 5-Loxin AKBA and AprèsFlex are patented formulas and anything patented by one company tends to add extra expense onto your supplements. That said, both do have the research showing they work well for joint pain and arthritis.

I don’t have arthritis myself, but regular 65% boswellic acids capsules have certainly worked well for me for low level joint pain. And good boswellia supplement brands like Double Wood are much less for a much higher overall dosage.

AprèsFlex and 5-Loxin AKBA capsules are almost always 100 mg per serving. That works out to around 20 mg and 30 mg of acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid respectively.

Double Wood’s Boswellia Extract supplement is 1,000 mg per serving, with minimum 65% boswellic acids (650 mg). In fact, the lab analysis certificate shown on their product page came in at 763 mg of boswellic acid, which is 76%.Olibanum supplement

Even if acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) is just a small percentage of those 650 mg to 763 mg of boswellic acids, it could still add up to a comparable amount. There are also other types of boswellic acids in boswellia serrata resin that may act synergistically with AKBA.

Given all of this, I’ll stick with the 65% boswellic acids boswellia capsules by Double Wood that have worked so well for me this past year. They’re third-party tested, last for 3 months at the suggested dose, and very good value here on the brand’s website. My supplement cupboard is always stocked up with them.

What is Boswellia Phytosome and Is It Worth It?

Boswellia phytosome is made by bonding boswellia serrata gum resin with lecithin phospholipids. Research like this has shown this form improves absorption in animal studies. But I must admit to being skeptical of whether it’s good value versus regular 65% boswellic acids capsules.

Thorne seems be the most popular brand selling boswellia phytosome. This supplement goes for $59 and there are 60 capsules of 350 mg in the container. That works out to 98 cents per pill and the Thorne supplement facts label doesn’t list the amount of boswellic acids, just Indian frankincense phytosome.

By comparison, Double Wood’s Boswellia Extract has 240 capsules of 500 mg with minimum 65% boswellic acids. Each pill works out to just 8 cents each, even less with the reductions on their website. This seems like much better value to me versus Thorne’s expensive offering.

A Boswellia Phytosome Supplement for Less

Swanson boswellia phytosome containerWhile I think Thorne’s Boswellia Phytosome product is overpriced, I’ve recently seen Swanson release their own boswellia phytosome supplement.

Both of these brands use the same patented boswellia serrata gum resin extract bound to phospholipids called Casperome, yet Swanson’s version is usually far cheaper to get. Unfortunately it’s often out of stock.

You have to check the labels carefully when getting Swanson boswellia supplements as this brand has 4 different versions. Their Boswellia Phytosome capsules pictured here, Swanson’s 5-Loxin AKBA Boswellia Serrata Extract above, a standardized 65% boswellia acids product, and their Full Spectrum Boswellia capsules that are actually the weakest of the lot.

Do Boswellia Liquid Drops Work?

Boswellia serrata liquid extracts are available but the brands I’ve seen look both underdosed and overpriced versus the more commonly used boswellia capsules and powders.

Lyfetrition Boswellia 4 oz liquid drops is 50% boswellic acids appears to be the best of an unimpressive bunch. But it’s twice the price of the best boswellia extract supplement above and contains ethanol and potassium sorbate, which some customers want to avoid.

Secrets of the Tribe Frankincense tincture is just the gum resin distilled in organic glycerin. I would not expect this product to be as effective as other boswellia supplement forms.

Importantly, frankincense essential oils are also commonly sold and popular. However, these products are highly concentrated and should never be taken internally. They can be used heavily diluted in a carrier oil for external skin and hair treatments, as described in this guide to boswellia benefits.

Are Boswellia Gummies Worth Taking?

You can find boswellia serrata gummies on Amazon and other supplement retailers, but I’d avoid getting them. So called nutritional gummies are a bit of a scam and little better than expensive candy.

All gummies require a range of different additives to make them sweet and chewy that are often far from healthy. They are usually made with high glycemic glucose syrup, which is pro-inflammatory and counteracts the very benefits most customers are trying to get from taking boswellia extract supplements.

Others are made with sugar alcohols like sorbitol and mannitol that can cause digestive side effects, such as bad gas and loose stools, in many people who take them.

Boswellia gummies are also expensive. One brand I saw for nearly $25 had only 30 low dose servings per container. Compare that with Double Wood’s Boswellia Extract capsules with 120 servings for less.

Boswellia Tablets vs Capsules

Source Naturals boswellia tabletsIn most cases you are better off choosing capsules over tablets for your nutritional supplements. Boswellia tablets are a perfect example of why.

Brands like Source Naturals and Nature’s Way offer boswellia serrata tablets. But they’re not very good value and require many different binders and other additives to make the tablet hold its shape.

Source Naturals Boswellia Extract tablets are made with dibasic calcium phosphate, stearic acid, modified cellulose gum, magnesium stearate and silica. They also cost nearly as much as Double Wood’s Boswellia Capsules for just 50 tablets.

Nature’s Way Boswellia tablets are even worse with cellulose, sodium croscarmellose, silica, stearic acid, maltodextrin, sunflower lecithin, sunflower oil and guar gum. Maltodextrin and sunflower oil in particular are not additives I want to see in any supplement I’m taking for better health. Best avoided.

Who Shouldn’t Use Boswellia Supplements?

I’ve never experienced any negative side effects from taking boswellia capsules, even at a double dose and on an empty stomach as a test. There are a few precautions to be aware of though before using this natural remedy, particularly for pregnant women, people using certain prescriptions and those with sensitive digestive systems.

  1. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Precautions: Boswellia is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to insufficient studies on its safety during this important time. It’s also believed to increase blood flow in the pelvic region, which is better avoided for pregnant women.
  2. People Using Blood Thinners: Supplementing with boswellia serrata can have a mild blood thinning effect so don’t take it with prescriptions designed for the same purpose without consulting your physician. It should be avoided before any surgery for the same reason.
  3. Gastrointestinal Side Effects: A small number of people experience heartburn, stomach pain, diarrhea or nausea with high doses of boswellia powder, particularly when taken on an empty stomach. This natural remedy is much better absorbed with a meal containing healthy fats so take it with food.
  4. Allergic Reactions: While very rare, there are reports of an allergic reaction to boswellia serrata. If you experience food allergy symptoms soon after taking a boswellia supplement then seek medical advice and discontinue use.

Overall, I think there are far more positive reasons to take boswellia serrata versus the rare cases of negative side effects. It’s a superfood supplement I take daily now and intend to keep on taking for the long term.

Top 2 Boswellia Supplements Overall in 2026

The main choice to make when looking for a good boswellia serrata supplement is whether you prefer to take capsules or mix a powder into drinks. Boswellia tablets, liquid drops and particularly gummies are inferior and should be avoided.

Best Value Boswellia Serrata Extract Capsules

Double Wood’s Boswellia Extract is at least 65% boswellic acids, has 1,000mg per serving and 240 capsules in the bottle. So it will last you for 4 months at the recommended daily dose.

It’s third-party tested for potency, purity and safety (with certificates shown on the product pages), and good value versus competitors here on the brand’s website, especially using the welcome discount and reductions for multipacks.Boswellia serrata supplement on table

I can understand why some customers would want to try the patented 5-Loxin AKBA capsules by Swanson or alternatively the AprèsFlex Boswellia by Life Extension. But the overall dosage is a bit low in my opinion.

Doublewood’s 65% boswellic acids capsules have ten times the amount of boswellia extract per serving, and four times the number of capsules in the bottle, for less than half the cost.

Best Boswellia Powder

Micro Ingredients Boswellia Serrata Extract powder is USDA-certified organic, standardized to 65% boswellic acids, additive and filler free, third-party lab tested, and manufactured in the USA in a cGMP facility.

With 8 ounces of powdered boswellia gum resin extract in the pouch, it works out to 151 servings of 1,500 milligrams. That’s a 5 month supply at the recommended daily dosage and quite cheap to take on a cost per serving basis. You can find it here for the best value on Amazon.

Micro Ingredients also make bulk powders for other complementary anti-inflammatory supplements, like high curcumin turmeric, collagen peptides, and glucosamine with chondroitin. Combining these powders together in a superfood smoothie would be even more effective for long term treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis.

There’s much more on what health conditions this natural remedy is good for, how it works, recommended dosages, and potential side effects in 7 Boswellia Serrata Benefits Backed by Science.

I’ve also recently completed a new comparison article called How Boswellia Works with Turmeric, Glucosamine, Ashwagandha, Ginger, Collagen and Cissus Quadrangularis.

Thank you for reading my guide to the best boswellia serrata supplements in 2026. I hope it’s been helpful and please feel free to ask any questions, including about any other brands you’ve seen and I’d be happy to compare them.
